Description
Thick cotton threads zigzag back and forth across the front of this mid century Yoruba woman’s wrapper cloth, forming neat chevron patterns. This increasingly scarce asooke pattern was called “Eko Bridge” after the zigazg iron struts that supported the early C20th bridge built to join Lagos Island (Eko) with the mainland. Weaving this cloth was a slow and painstaking process taking about ten times as long as plain weave. This is a particularly neat version, with a brown stripe down the centre of each beige “sanyan” strip. In excellent complete condition. These strong cloths make excellent wall hangings or furnishing fabrics for pillows or small upholstery projects.
