Description

Although this beautiful cloth looks like a classic design of Yoruba asooke, made up of multiple different strip patterns, that was worn for weddings, in fact it was woven by a woman on the upright loom and is made up of two wide panels joined at the centre. As such it is an interesting and quite unusual example of a female weaver directly copying what was typically a narrow strip design woven by men. There sale price reflects the condition of the cloth which has a worn hole and a couple of other weak spots. Dates from circa 1950s.
Measurements 6’9″ x 4’6″, 205 cm x 136.
