Description

A four pointed star centres the interlocking texts on the back of this remarkable sufi inspired tunic. From Jenne or Timbuktu, ancient centres of Islamic scholarship in Mali, this talismanic tunic is covered with protective phrases, “magic squares”, the names of Allah and similar. An Iman would prepare the handspun cotton strip weave ground by writing an appropriate Sura from the Koran on a wooden writing board, washing off the text into a bowl with other ingredients, then painting the liquid onto the cloth giving a hard surface to write on when dry. The finished tunic would be worn in secret under a robe by someone requiring especially powerful protection. Unusually this example was made using patterned cloth and with unexpected flashes of pink, yellow, and green ink. It comes with a sash in the same fabric.
Dates from second half of twentieth century and is in excellent condition.
Measurements; width as shown 6’1″ X 3’8″, 186 cm X 112.
