Description
Spectacular Ewe kente chief’s cloth, undoubtedly the work of a highly skilled master weaver for a wealthy patron whose name is woven at the centre of the fabric. Around it coloured blocks and stripes alternate with a myriad of finely woven supplementary weft float motifs including animals, birds, people, a flintlock gun, scissors, and I particularly like the two different types of hand saws. Ewe cloths of this quality and complexity are now very scarce. Dates from circa 1910-1930s. The cloth is 18 strips wide and likely originally had twenty strips. There are no patches or repairs so it is possible two strips were retained by the family, perhaps for the ancestral shrine, when this cloth was sold.
Measurements 9’8″ x 5′, 300cm x 152.
