Two Asafo company officers (supi), identified by the leather whips at the wrist, confront a massive eagle on this superb mid C20th Fante Asafo flag. This depicts the power of the company against threatening rivals. The artist of this flag can be tentatively identified as Kwaw Hannah of the Denkyira workshop. See Figure 3.6 in Forni and Ross’s catalogue, “Art, Honor, and Ridicule” for a flag by the same artist in the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum.
Dates from circa 1940s. Condition is excellent, some neat repairs.
Measurements 153 cm x 89, 60 inches x 35. plus fringes
