Description
Beautiful Yoruba indigo and white hand spun cotton woman’s wrapper cloth, in an obscure style. Woven by a woman weaver on the upright loom, each of the three quite narrow panels has three large extra weft float motifs including a comb and two versions of the Koran writing board shape. No other examples in this style are known to me. The cloth has a soft relaxed texture from a relatively loose weave. It was probably woven in the area east and south of Ilorin in the early to mid decades of the C20th. In excellent condition. Measurements 74 inches x 59, 189 cm x 150.
