Description
Fascinating Fante Asafo flag with a rare entirely hand embroidered design. It shows the construction of one of the numerous forts built on the coast of the Fante region of Ghana since the 16th century by European colonists including the Portuguese, Dutch, British and Danes. It’s likely that this unidentified Asafo company played an important role in the building of the local fort, something documented for at least one other company. Builders carry bowls of bricks on their heads while building tools are laid out below the walls. Some wear. Dates from circa 1960.
Measurements 68 inches X 42, 174 cm X 107.
