Description

Superb Fante Asafo flag by the master flagmaker Mr.McCarty (died c.1955) of Anomabo, one of the great figures of the pre-Independence golden age of the Asafo flag tradition. A man puts his hand in the pot of boiling water, illustrating the proverb, “It boils but it doesn’t burn.” This popular flag theme was used to taunt rival companies that despite their fierce appearance they were not actually dangerous. Mr McCarty (birth name Kwame Boah – see Forni & Ross, 2017:61) pioneered a distinctive style of figures with thinner proportions and articulated arms. This flag likely dates from around the 1940s or early 1950s. Interestingly we can see the faint outlines of an additional figure and a snake in a more conventional style that were added later and subsequently removed. Small marks but otherwise in excellent complete condition. Measurements 58 inches x 36, 147 cm x 92.
