Description
Manjak wedding cloth from Guinea Bissau, circa 1970. These cloths were presented to the bride at her wedding and later used as a wrapper to support a baby on her back. The designs are a distant descendant and modernised version of the complex weft float motifs developed in the C17th in Cape Verde and Bissau. The colour of this one is a pale pink cotton weft on a white warp (not colour run!). Much brighter colours have subsequently become fashionable in both Guinea Bissau and Senegal. In excellent complete condition. Measurements 5’9″ x 4’4″, 176 cm x 131. These cloths were presented to the bride at her wedding and later used as a wrapper to support a baby on her back.
