Description
Yoruba starch resist indigo dyed “adire eleko” cloth from around 1970, with a design called Oloba, “with a king.” This design originated with cloths called “Jubilee” that had a central medallion depicting the British King George and Queen Mary, derived from widely circulated commemorative items that marked the royal jubilee in 1935. Over the years it was adapted and simplified, depicting various local monarchs and more rarely subsequent British rulers. Unlike hand drawn adire cloths, here the starch resist was applied through tin stencils that were made from the this metal lining of tea chests. A cardboard comb was used to create the cloud-like patterns that proliferate across the cloth. In excellent condition. Measurements 6’6″ x 5’10”.
