Description

We can see the influence of British colonial heraldic prints on the layout of this rare classic period Fante Asafo flag, with bilateral symmetry around the central figure supporting a crown, flanked by two armed guards and two huge cockerels, each with amusing oversized legs. Made for an unidentified No1 Company in circa 1930-1940 this flag is reminiscent of aspects of the work of the master flagmaker Nana McCarty (died c.1955) and the Anomabo workshop, notably in the separate arms of the human figures. There are some small holes below the left hand bird, otherwise in good neat condition.

Measurements 5’4″ x 2’9″, 163 cm x 84.
