Description
A remarkable almost “boro” style indigo curiosity that would work mounted as a piece of contemporary textile art. Thick, faded, abrashed indigo hand spun cotton threads layer across each strip, joined together by a distinctive braiding technique that creates an almost three dimensional effect. This bizarre cloth is an overskirt or apron worn on ceremonial occasions by a woman of the Gwari (or Bwari) people of central Nigeria. It likely dates from early in the twentieth century. Condition is worn and faded as shown. Measurements 5’5 x 2’4, 165 cm x 73.
