Black and white checkerboard patterning is crossed by the red, green, and yellow of the Malian flag on this finely woven and densely patterned Fulani wedding hanging from Mali. We can see updated versions of the traditional Fulani motifs and tassels of the much older wool wedding hanging traditions. These cloths were an important aspect of weddings in wealthy Malian households in the 1960s, hung up on walls or draped as a coverlet over a newly fashionable European style bed, they served to display and enhance the prestige of the families involved. Dates from around the 1960s. Minor signs of wear but in very good complete condition. Measurements 7’8″ x 4’9″, 234 cm x 141.
