Fulani weavers in Mali updated their traditional indigo and white checkerboard cloths in the second half of the twentieth century to create dramatic new styles of wedding hanging. On this piece there is an explosion of bright new colours and a careful reworking of the narrow strip format to create bold patterns in a style that was called “tapis.”
Dates from circa 1970s and is in excellent complete condition.
