Description
Enjoy the simple but sophisticated graphic design of this mid weight cotton blanket cloth, called saagi, from a Fulani weaver in Mali. Dated to around the 1970s. Irregular juxtaposition of the evenly spaced weft stripes gives an offbeat air to the central field, framed by closer packed stripes on three sides only. A textural contrast between the slubby feel of the white hand spun cotton and the smoother mill spun thread of the black stripes is also pleasing. Eminent Africanist Robert Farris Thompson was particularly drawn to the offbeat patterning of these cloths in his seminal exhibition and catalogue “African Art in Motion” (1974). In excellent complete condition.
Measurements 7’5″ x 4’10, 226 cm x 147.
