Description
Dramatic variation on the checkerboard style of Ewe kente, this stunning woman’s cloth has a regular grid of dark blue, green, and red blocks on a vibrant yellow ground. Unusually it has distinct borders, alternating blue weft float motifs with narrow blue blocks. A single dark blue strip forms the lower edge. Notice how the weaver has broken up the symmetry with a green stripe in the borders at the centre. Dates from circa 1930s and is in excellent complete condition, one tiny patch repair by our conservator.
Measurements 72 inches x 45 1/2, 183 cm x 115.
