Description
Really superb museum quality Yoruba “adire eleko” woman’s wrapper cloth dating from the 1960s. The hand drawn starch resist indigo dyed design exhibits the exceptional skill of a master artist, an “iya alaro,” “mother of indigo”, using brushes made from feathers and leaf stems to apply the starch resist with fine control of the lines throughout. This classic design was called “Olokun” after a Yoruba orisa deity associated with wealth and good fortune. The striped brocade pattern on the cloth adds a further layer to the design. From a Canadian private collection. In excellent condition.
Measurements 6’3 ” x 5’8″, 192 cm x 173.
