Description
Very rare Ewe strip weave loincloth dating from the late C19th or early C20th. Three very narrow weft faced strips with added fringe at one end. Scattered weft stripes throughout the white section. Measurements 8’4″ x 7 1/2 inches, 255 cm x 19. Excellent condition. A few faint marks. When I first saw a small group of these last year I assumed they were worn by young women in a regional Ewe version of the kind of coming of age ceremony that is widespread in southern Ghana (see photo) but the dealer suggested they were worn by men. It’s certainly possible but for now we don’t know.
