Glimpses of precious magenta silk from the trans-Saharan trade centre sets of narrow weft stripes in this circa 1900 Yoruba aso oke woman’s wrapper cloth. Two different strips woven from hand spun dark indigo dyed cotton alternate. The plaid/check pattern was called “petuje” which roughly translated as “surpasses etu”, the prestigious “guineafowl indigo check. Retains its original hand sewn seams and hems and is in excellent condition.
Measurements 187 cm x 106. 73 1/2 inches x 42.
