Description
Dating from around 1900 this exceptional Ewe kente chief’s cloth has wide Asante style borders made up of a complex alternation of weft blocks and regular float shapes, framing a dark blue central field on which threefold pattern blocks enclose a variety of very neatly woven geometric motifs. Over the decdeas the colours have muted to soft pinks, pale blues, and yellows in a most attractive and subtle mix.
Remarkably for this early date the cloth is in excellent complete condition.
Measures 118 inches X 73, 300 cm X 186.
