Lovely soft blues and a pinkish red central stripe on this classic Dioula ikat woman’s wrapper cloth from northern Ivory Coast. Dates from circa 1960 and is in excellent complete condition. How can we distinguish a Dioula ikat from the much more common and much cheaper Baule ikats ? Dioula cloths typically had blocks of ikat across the whole width (or almost the whole width, as here), while Baule ikats are usually set within stripes. Although the traditions are closely related and Baule weavers learned ikat from the Dioula in the mid C20th the overall look of the cloths is different.
