Description

We love the teardrop shaped flashes of colour set in the faded indigo and white handspun cotton ground of this fine and rare Hausa “luru” cloth from northern Nigeria. Two sets of three “crowns” (actually I think called “knives”, flank the central striped section. Dates from the first half of the twentieth century. Just cleaned by our conservator and in very good neat condition although a few faint marks of use remain. Dates to around 1930-1950, later examples made much greater use of red and orange thread and often became somewhat garish. From this period they are quite rare.
Measurements: 7’5″ x 3’6″, 225cm x 108.
