Description

Finely hand drawn starch resist indigo dyed Yoruba “adire eleko” woman’s wrapper cloth from Nigeria. Dating from around 1960 this cloth is a version of a classic adire design called “Olokun,” after a Yoruba orisa deity associated with good fortune, and in particular with wealth from the sea. Multiple panels of designs include animals, birds, some endearingly fat little fish, leaves etcetera. The background cloth used has brocaded stripes adding another layer to the design. A couple of small faint marks but overall in very good condition.

Measurements 6′ x 3’11”, 182 cm x 119.
