Description

Blue Black. This rich intense indigo dyed cloth is a quite rare man’s wrapper cloth, Iborunla, from a subgroup of the Yoruba in Nigeria. Woven from thick hand spun cotton, it’s made up of five separate panels joined edge to edge, rather than the three wider pieces typical of Yoruba men’s cloths. The work of a woman weaver using an upright loom, it was woven with white stripes against an indigo background, then overdyed repeatedly to obtain the desired intensity of colour. It likely dates from around the 1950s and many years of use mean it no longer sheds any colour. The cloth would have been worn toga fashion by a senior man or chief. In excellent condition.
Measurements 7’3″ x 6’6″, 221 cm x 197.
