Description
Lovely early C20th Yoruba asooke woman’s wrapper cloth woven from soft hand spun indigo dyed cotton. Strips with a large check pattern, called “petuje”, alternate with strips that have three white warp stripes. There are subtle flashes of magenta silk alaari from the trans-Saharan caravan trade just at the lower edge of the cloth where they would be visible in use. Dates from circa 1900 and is in excellent condition.
Measurements 5’10” x 4’2″. 177cm x 127.
