Description
Classic hand drawn starch resist indigo dyed Yoruba adire eleko cloth with a design called eye-pe, or “all the birds are here”, a traditional Ibadan adire design. As well as various birds including chickens and pigeons the pattern depicts crocodiles, chameleons, watches, drums, and scorpions. The short text reads “Oleorowoya” which means something like “It’s impossible for a lazy man to borrow money.”
This very neat versions dates from around the 1960s and is in excellent condition. It has become extremely hard over the past few years to find these beautiful vintage adire cloths in Nigeria. and prices have risen accordingly. From a Canadian private collection assembled circa 1970.
