Description
Rows of birds and animals separated by Koran writing boards on an ultra rare style of Yoruba woman’s weaving from a small town called Esie, east of Ilorin. These cloths were worn with the bulk of the plain section bunched around the waist, leaving the patterned panel exposed. They were called “alara”, which means “something wonderful”, and were the most prestigious and rarest type of wedding cloth in the locality. Ideally an expert woman weaver would make one for her daughter’s wedding attire. This is a particularly fine well woven example from a highly skilled weaver. In excellent complete condition, dates from circa 1930-1950.
Measurements 6′ x 4’10, 183 cm x 146.
